Shungite is a relatively rare substance found only in Karelia. The major component (99%) is carbon “fullerines” where 60 atoms of carbon are linked together in a shape like the one shown above. In addition to the carbon, shungite also contains most of the elements in the periodic table. Shungite is thought to be at least 2 billion years old. They are one type of carbon nanostructure (CNS).
